Peyton is a veteran the world stopped seeing a long time ago. Paralyzed by PTSD and living in a homeless veteran camp, he carries a war that never really ended, one that resurfaces every time the sky lights up. On New Year's Eve, it does. In a single unbearable moment, a night of fireworks becomes a night of gunfire, and a young man named Charlie is dead before anyone understands what happened, including Peyton himself.
Consumed by guilt he can't name and a truth he doesn't yet know is his own, Peyton throws himself into a mission: building transitional housing for veterans like him, men and women the system was supposed to catch and didn't. But his path collides with Zia, the mayor's daughter, and the girlfriend Charlie left behind. What begins as an unlikely alliance becomes something neither of them expects, two people bound by the same trauma, standing on opposite sides of a tragedy neither can see clearly yet.
